Anecdote | Both William Darnell (born 1817) and Ruth Hodges (born 1821) were born in Tennessee. The names of their parents are not known. There were several Darnell and Hodges families in Tennessee during the same time period, with various spellings and misspellings, making research difficult. William Darnell and Ruth Hodges married on September 18, 1841 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He was 24, she was 20. They are found in the 1850 census in Grainger County, the surname written “Darnold.” William’s age is listed as 28 and Ruth’s as 25. Based on these ages, William’s birth year would be 1822 and Ruth’s 1825-but their grave stones, possibly more accurate, record their birth years as 1817 and 1821 respectively. William worked as a laborer. Their children (listed in the 1850 census) are: 1. Sarah E. Darnell, age 4, born about 1846 (her tombstone says she was born in Morristown, Tennessee in 1849), married Samuel Ebzan Love (our line) 2. Milton Darnell, age 2 (born about 1848) William died fairly young, in the summer of 1854 at age 37. The cause of his death is not known, but there was a cholera epidemic in Tennessee that year. Ruth did not remarry. In 1860 she was still in Grainger County with her two teenaged children, working as a seamstress. In 1880 Ruth was in Knoxville, Tennessee, widowed, living with married daughter Sarah E. Love and Sarah’s family. Ruth died the following year, 1881, at 60. William and Ruth’s graves are found in Liberty Hill Methodist Church Cemetery in Hamblen County, Tennessee. William’s birth date is recorded as January 4, 1817 and his death date as July 29, 1854. Ruth’s date of birth on her broken headstone is November 15, 1821, and her date of death September 4, 1881. In the 1880 census, Ruth stated her parents were born in North Carolina. But not enough information is known to be able to trace either the Darnell or the Hodges line further back. | |
