Anecdote | In Vol 2 of the series, Dictionary of North Carolina Biography edited by William S. Powell, is an article on Christopher Gale which highlights his political career and gives some biography which I will try to extract. The article was written by George Stevenson, who gives the following sources: Great Britain P.R.O., "Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series"; "America and West Indies" Vols for 1700-35, North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, for Albemarle Co. Records, Bertie Co. Deed Book 3, British Records Collection, Colonial Court Records, Little-Mordecai Papers, and Secretary of State Wills, William S. Price and Robert J. Cain, eds, "Colonial Records of North Carolina (Second Series), vols 4-7 (1974-83), William L. Saunders, ed., "Colonial Records of North Carolina, vols 1-3 (1886). Christopher Gale (ca 1679-1735), colonial chief justice of NC, was b. in York to a family that came from the neighborhood of Scruton, North Riding, Yorkshire, England. He was the eldest of 4 sons of Rev. Miles Gale and Margaret Stone. Three of their sons settled and died in NC. This next sentence is ver batim: "Gale's grandfather, Christopher Stone, was chancellor, and his first cousin once removed, the celebrated antiquarian, Thomas Gale, was the "good dean" of the archiepiscopal cathedral of York." Gale emigrated to NC ca 1801, settling in the area south of Albemarle Sound, Bath Co. He married in Jan 1702 Sarah Laker Harvey, dau of Benjamin Laker and widow of Gov. Thomas Harvey. In 1721, Gale moved from Bath to Albemarle Co. Gale's 1st wife, Sarah Laker Harvey and mother of his children Miles, Penelope and Elizabeth, died about 1730. He then married Sarah Isabella Ismay, widow of his friend, John Ismay, about 1733. In his will of 1734, Gale gave back to his widow, the property she had brought into the marriage. Gale's dau, Penelope, married William Little. His dau, Elizabeth married Henry Clayton. | |
