Fred Baker Simpson, Jr., age 77, died on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at his home in Americus, Georgia with his wife of 52 years, Lisa, by his side. Visitation will be held at Americus First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Lee St. on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at 1:00 pm followed by funeral services at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Lebanon Cemetery in Plains. Rev. Daryl Brown, Dr. Mike Simpson, Craig Caldwell and Mike O’Sheasy will officiate. The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Joshua Willis, Andrew Willis, Thomas Willis and Chase Conger. 
Fred grew up in the mill village of Chicopee, GA, near Gainesville. From a very young age he was recognized as a talented and determined athlete and made a name for himself in Gainesville and the North Georgia area. He was a stand-out at South Hall High School as a class officer and athlete, lettering in all sports all four years. He was quarterback for the football team, baseball pitcher, forward in basketball and participated in track. He was proud to say that he never missed one day of school. 
During his senior year, he turned away minor league baseball scouts and through the strong advice of his father, decided to pursue a college education. He joined the Huntingdon Hawks baseball team with a full scholarship, where he pitched and played outfield. After graduation from Huntingdon College, Fred taught Social Studies and Physical Education and coached at Manchester High School, Manchester Georgia and at Cook County High School in Adel, Georgia. 
In 1969 Fred joined the United States Secret Service as a Special Agent. He excelled in all aspects of Secret Service training, and consistently maintained a rating of Expert Marksman. His career in the Secret Service has taken him to every continent, over 200 countries and many remote and sometimes dangerous locations. He was team leader for many Foreign Dignitary details at the United Nations, National Conventions and International Summits. He received a Commendation as Advance Team Leader for his leadership at the State Funeral of Anwar Sadat in Cairo, Egypt, where four living presidents were in attendance. He served under the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Regan, George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. His long term assignments were with the Vice Presidential Details of Spiro T. Agnew, Gerald Ford, Nelson Rockefeller and Walter Mondale. He also held the position of ASAC (Assistant to the Agent in Charge) to the Carter Protective Detail when President Jimmy Carter left office and returned home to Plains. President Carter's interest in world affairs and humanitarian efforts expanded Fred's travel experiences extensively. Fred's last assignment was to the USSS Atlanta Field Office where he was Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge. His leadership duties included that of Agent in Charge of the Nigerian Task Force, the Counterfeit Squad and the Federal Crimes Fraud Squad. He also was Co-Coordinator for Security for the National Democratic Convention in Atlanta in 1988. He was recognized as an Outstanding Federal Officer in the Metro Atlanta Area. 
Fred retired in 1999 and continued to work for the Secret Service doing background investigations. He later worked as a Security Consultant for major corporations, such as Home Depot, Coca-Cola, CNN, Omni Hotels and the New York Mets. 
As a hobby, he took pride in caning old chairs and seldom missed an Atlanta Braves games on TV. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren play ball. 
Fred is survived by his wife, Lisa (Mary Louisa); four daughters, Polly Conger (Jamie), Pam Willis (Shawn), Elizabeth Podijil (Mark), Catherine Simpson (Tony), and a son, Joel Preston (Pam); a brother, Dr. Mike Simpson (Beth); 9 grandchildren, Hannah Robinson (Cody), Chase Conger, Joshua Willis, Andrew Willis, Thomas Willis, Ada Podijil, Colin Preston, Julia Preston, Audrey Preston and 2 great grandchildren, Whitley Robinson and Rowan Preston. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred Baker Simpson, Sr. and Morine Simpson, and his brother, Jack Simpson. 
Memorials may be given to Fred Simpson Scholarship at Huntingdon College, 1500 East Fairview Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama 36106.
