Anecdote1776Samuel McMurray of TN, together with John McMurray (my ancestor's brother) explored North Carolina (now TN) in 1776. Samuel eventually moved to NC from Augusta Co, VA in 1779 with a cousin or brother, William McMurray. They took up land on the Cumberland near French Lick, above what is now Nashville. This William was killed by Indians before he could start a family. Samuel, on the other hand, sired three sons, including a William (born 1786), before Samuel was also was killed by Indians in 1792.2

Death12 March 1792He died on 12 March 1792 at age 35 at His Plantation, French LickBG, in Donelson, Tennessee, United StatesBGO. Based on a 1937 interview Clements found, the 1792 murder of Samuel McMurray happened in Donelson along present-day Spring Valley Road.

He was killed by Indians. Haywood's "History of Tennessee" says: "McMurry was killed by the Indians in April, 1792, on his own plantation at the mouth of Stone River."
Anecdote (fam)Be aware that after Samuel's death his widow moved back to Clark Co., KY to be with her folks. The three sons in time moved back to the old farm on the Cumberland River to what by then was Tennessee.
