"Sometime around 1759, John Stewart moved from August County, Virginia to the Fourth Creek Community which later became Statesville. William Sharpe's map of the Old Fourth Creek Congregation, drawn in 1773, shows the home of a Scottish-Irish Presbyterian, John Stewart (or Stuart) located near Fort Dobbs. Stewart, a farmer and joiner (furniture maker), distinguished himself by serving in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Descendants of John Stewart include Ralph Stewart, Robert Alexander Stewart and Nancy Stewart. |
