Biography

AnecdoteJames BRITTON married June 28, 1860, in Muscogee County, Georgia, to Lourina J. "Lou" MORRIS. In 1870, he appears with his wife and three children in Columbus, working as a retail family grocer. The 1880 census shows them residing in Brownville (name changed to Phenix City in 1889) in Lee County, Alabama; he was working as a confectioner and she was a homemaker. With them are five children: John F. (born ca. 1861 in Georgia), Madison H. (male, born ca. 1868 in Georgia), Thomas W. (born ca. 1870 in Alabama - was six months old on the 1870 census), Ellen J. (born ca. 1872 in Georgia) and James M. (born ca. 1874 in Georgia); John, Madison and Thomas are working in a cotton mill. His unmarried sister Susan was residing with them at that time, working in the home.

James & Luraney appear on the 1900 census of Phenix City, Lee County, Alabama, living in a rental house at 411 South Railroad Street - name spelled BRITTAIN here; James (born April 1833 in Alabama, father born in Alabama, mother in Georgia) was employed as a sweeper in a cotton mill; Luraney (born November 1835 in Alabama, father born in Alabama, mother in Georgia) had borne 5 children, four of whom were still living. With them are their daughter & son-in-law, Wesley R. & Ellen MANN - she had borne no children, and he was a weaver at a cotton mill. While they appear together on the 1900 census, her published death notice does not mention her husband surviving her (also, Luraney was a "consistent member of Broad street Methodist church"), so the James who died in 1900 in Phenix City (located in Lee County at that time) would logically be her husband.

"MR. JAMES BRITTON DEAD: Well Known Citizen of Phenix City Passed Away Yesterday Evening. // Mr. James BRITTON, aged 68 years, died at his residence, No. 411 South Railroad street, Phenix City, at _:45 yesterday evening. BRITTON, of Macon, and Mrs. Ellen MANN, of Phenix City, and is also survived by one sister, Miss Susan BRITTON , of Phenix City. // Mr. BRITTON was a member of the Broad Street Methodist church. [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Friday, 27 JUL 1900, p. 7.
