Biography

AnecdoteSamuel W. Dobbs moved to Chilton Co. from Coosa Co. with his family about 1875 and became a Methodist Circuit riding preacher for the Alabama Methodist Conference. He died 1-2-1883 and is buried in Chilton Ct. Ala. somewhere. His dau.-in-law, Sarah, stated in some letters that she left Calera, Ala. with other family member about 1940 traveling South looking for Samuel grave site and found it. It did not have a monument, but had an old deteriorating arbor over the grave. We do not know the name of the graveyard and was hopeing that there might be an obit that would list the Church and graveyard. His brother N.A. Dobbs also was a preacher and he and some of his family is buried at the Pleasant Grove Cem. West of Kincheon
AnecdoteThe following information was found in the Samford University Library (Birmingham, AL) in a book entitled " History of Methodism in Alabama and West Florida" by Marion Elias Lazenby. I don't have the year of print.
"The 45th Methodist Conference met at Robinson Springs (AL) Nov. 7, 1873 and received into the Conference S.W. Dobbs, N.A. Dobbs and W.A. Wells to be Circuit riders for the Tallapoosa Circuit" that consisted of several co.'s. They came from the Congregational Methodist Church.
Most inportant was the listing of the deceased ministers that served the Methodist Conference. Their full name, birthday, death date and place of burial, etc.
"Nathaniel Arnold Dobbs, b Aug. 16, 1823..d Feb.7, 1917, Pleasant Grove, Chilton, Co."
"Samuel Winfield Dobbs ... death 1883.........joined Conference 1873" No place of burial for S.W.
Another source of information for Alabama research is the Alabama State Census of 1820-1866. The family of Nathaniel Dobbs Jr (wife Sarah A. Red) and several of their children's families are found on the 1850 & 1855 Alabama State Census for Macon County. Sarah Dobbs is listed on the 1866 Alabama State Census, Macon County, as Head of Household aged 60-70. So now we know that Nathaniel Dobbs Jr died between 1860 and 1866.
