Anecdote | Lou Poole Comments WILLIAM McCAIN. For the longest I was thrown off track by the fact that a William McCain, age 56, was living next door to Hugh McCain (son of Hance) in the 1870 census of Randolph Co., NC. Whoever this William McCain was - and I don't know who he was at this time - he was not the son of Hance! Hance McCain named William as one of the executors of his will in 1824. Hance, being something of a lawyer, darned sure knew that one had to be at least 21 years old to be a legal executor, so this observation means that William was born ca. 1803,or before. In the 1813 will of Robert Cole of Guilford County, he names "Clarisy McCain, formerly Clarisy Beavil, now w/o William McCain..." OK, now this means that William was born even earlier. In the 1820 census of Guilford County, he is listed in his own household as being in the age 25-45 category, with a wife, and NO CHILDREN(after at least 7 years of marriage one would expect some children if they ever had any, which apparently they did not). I have not found him anywhere in the 1830 census (and certainly not the NC census - so he had apparently moved elsewhere by then.) But in 1840 he appears as William "McKane" in Madison County, Illinois! With a wife and no children. In the 1850 census of Marine (township), Madison County, he was listed as age 62, born NC, occupation physician, with wife Clarissa, age 55, born NC, and no children. He is not listed in the 1860 census, so apparently he and Clarissa both died between 1850 and 1860.Their probates are located in the Illinois State Archives, Madison County, Box 19, Tray 58. The 1860 census age means that he was born ca.1788, which makes him the oldest of Hance's children!1 | |
