GUY McCAIN. Guy McCain is found in Vigo County, INDIANA, in the 1850 census. (I have been told by an experienced genealogist that the 1840 census of Vigo County is a mess, and that there's no reason to believe he wasn't there by 1840 just because he is not listed.) He was listed as age 43, born NC, occupation farmer, with wife Thankful, age 39, born NC. Children were John, age 19, born NC,Mary, age 17, born IN, Henry, age 11, Betty, age 8, Arthur, age 5. The fact that John was born in NC while Mary was born in IN indicates, conveniently, that the family moved to Indiana between 1831-1833.

In the 1860 census, Guy and family had moved to Madison Co., IL (where his brother William had lived and died). Guy's census entry is hard to find; he's listed as "Guy Guimccain". Members of his household at this time are Guy, age 52, Thankful, Henry, age 21, and Forbis, age 15 (obviously full name: Arthur Forbis, when comparing 1850 and 1860 data). Thankful died 4 Aug 1887 in Madison Co., IL, and on 5 Jul 1892 Guy married Mrs. Emma Howard Macher. I do not know when, exactly, Guy died.

Some of his children are known to have returned to Vigo County, IN, after they were grown, and there are some hints that they may have even intermingled with some of the Pike County,IN, McCains which will be discussed later in another part.
