Samuel was in Savannah when she died in July, 1862. When she was born, her father said, "Here is the most beautiful babe of all. She is the blossom of my last seed. I am blessed beyond measure." She died of membranous croup. They tried to preserve her body by wrapping it in camphor and salt and putting it in the cellar while a group of men tried to find Samuel to tell him what happened. She was buried one day before he got home. He changed her name from Virginia Victoria to Mourning Victoria after her death. |
