AnecdoteBy James Paul Anderson

      Joel Anderson, Sr., was born August 31, 1781 in Cumberland County, Virginia; son of William Anderson and Catherine Shirley Anderson; married first, Ann Shasteen, married second Sarah David Greer (b.?- November 7, 1844).He died December 30, 1852 at his residence in Williamson County, Tennessee.Both are buried in the Balm-in-Gilead Cemetery near Franklin, Tennessee.

      Joel Anderson emigrated to Jackson County, Tennessee from Cumberland County, Virginia with his brothers, Garland and Thomas Shirley Anderson, Sr. in 1806.Staying in Jackson County, Tennessee for a brief time, he moved to Davidson County, Tennessee in 1809, and afterwards to Williamson County, Tennessee where he lived until his death.While in Jackson County, it is believed he lived on Roaring River, near Blackburn's Fork Creek.

      At age eighteen (18), he became a member of the Baptist Church, in which he was a minister for many years.In the very early days of the Restoration Movement, he became a member of the Church of Christ at Freindship, a community in Williamson County, Tennessee.He was one of the first preachers of this movement to preach in Franklin, Tennessee.Joel Anderson and Andrew Craig were co-organizers of the Fourth Street Church of Christ in Franklin, Tennessee in 1833.Joel Anderson's picture, glasses, and watch are encased in this church building today.

      By his first marriage, he had one (1) child.By his second marriage he had ten (10) children.
