Biography

AnecdoteSo, my Great Grandfather is Willie Edwin McLendon.  W.E. was the Chief of Police for Greenville, Meriwether County, Georgia.  He first married Georgia Turner and had a daughter with her but sadly she died at the age of 22/23 of consumption.... their daughter was 2 at the time and grew up under the care of her family.  W.E. later married Missouri "Zubie" Johnson, youngest child of Judge Rufus Johnson and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Thrash.  Judge Rufus developed dementia and attacked W.E. one day, bullets went flying, W.E. was injured and Judge Rufus died of one of the many shots (I have the Meriwether Vindicator article).  W.E. and Missouri had 2 boys, Claude Early and Willie Eddie (my grandfather).  Attached is a photo of them as boys.... Claude is sitting.  I knew Uncle Claude as a child.  My father always used to visit him when we were in Moultrie visiting my grandmother.  Willie Edwin died early at the age of 39 and I highly suspect is was from consumption.  My grandfather Willie Eddie DID die at 29 from consumption.  I would suspect that it originated from Georgia Turner.  TB can be contracted and lay dormant in your blood for a long time before it becomes active.  So sad.  Anyways, my grandfather was the Assistant Fire Chief for the Moultrie Fire Department and then became the Deputy Sheriff of Colquitt County under Sheriff Boyd.  I also have photos.  He and my grandmother lived in the newly built Moultrie Jailhouse with my Aunt Mabel, Uncle Eddie (named Willie Edwin), my dad Jack and my Aunt Etta who was born "in jail".  My grandparents and my parents are buried in the Westview (Old Moultrie) Cemetery.1
