Anecdote | (Original compilation by ??) Records consistently list the birthplace of our ancestor John Love (1793-1862, who lived his adult life in Tennessee) as Pennsylvania. A John Love was baptized at Fagg's Manor Presbyterian Church in Londonderry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania on June 2, 1793 to a father named Samuel Love (born about 1771), no mother named. Our John Love later named one of his sons Samuel. The timing, location, and naming patterns are appropriate for 1771 Samuel Love to be 1793 John Love’s father, although there is no proof. Samuel Love served as a witness to the May 11, 1793 will of his father, William Love of Londonderry, Chester County, Pennsylvania. In the will, William named his wife Sarah (who died in 1822), sons Samuel and John, daughters Rebecca, Martha, and Jean, as well as Samuel’s children William and Sarah. (1793 John was not born until after William’s will was written, so his name did not appear.) 1770 records show William owned 150 acres in Londonderry, 2 horses, 2 cows, and 5 sheep. Most of the original settlers of Londonderry are said to have been Irish Protestant immigrants. Samuel received 5 shillings in his father’s will, but no land. If Samuel was our 1793 John’s father, William was his grandfather. The 1790 census lists Samuel Love in Londonderry in a household of 6. Next door is William Love, probably his father. Ten years later in 1800, Samuel Love is in a household of 8, his age between 26-44, with a female in the same age bracket and 6 people under 16-this could be Samuel, his wife, and 6 children (5 sons and 1 daughter). On the same page is a John Love, probably Samuel’s brother, also in a household of 8. A Samuel Love served in the War of 1812 as a private with the 17th Regiment of Wallace’s Pennsylvania Militia, but whether this was the same Samuel is unknown. There were Samuel Loves in states other than Pennsylvania. Several Loves moved to Tennessee in the early 1800s, when unclaimed lands were offered at nominal fees after Tennessee achieved statehood in 1796. A Samuel Love did come to Tennessee-which could account for our John Love being there-but whether this was John’s father is not known. A Samuel Love received military warrant #4211 for 640 acres of land in Tennessee on December 12, 1796. (Since Samuel had not received land in his father’s will, he may have been in search of land for himself and his family.) In 1817 a Samuel Love was the Director of the Maryville Bank, and in 1821 a Samuel Love’s home served as the site for Knox County elections. Was this 1771 Samuel Love from Pennsylvania? Or did Samuel stay in Pennsylvania, as did his brother John? Records show one or more Samuel Loves in Pennsylvania during this same time period. Without more information, it is impossible to sort them all out. Samuel Love (born about 1771) and William Love (died 1793) seem very likely possibilities to be 1793 John Love’s father and grandfather. Naming patterns are consistent-1793 John used the names Samuel, Sarah, and Martha for some of his children. But the line cannot be traced farther back than William Love, who may have immigrated from Ireland. Love was originally an English surname but many Loves immigrated to Ireland. | |

Anecdote | 1793 | Based on a 1793 Londonderry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania baptism record from Fagg's Manor Presbyterian Church, the father of our John Love (who lived from about 1792-1862) has been theorized by some genealogists to be Samuel Love, born about 1771. Our John Love, who lived his adult life in Tennessee, always reported his place of birth as Pennsylvania. The June 2, 1793 baptism record for a John Love records him as the son of Samuel Love (no mother listed), although this could be someone else of the same name. We can verify there was a Samuel Love in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The 1790 census lists Samuel Love living in Londonderry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, in a household of 6. Samuel is listed next to William Love, who may have been his father. In 1800 a Samuel Love is listed again in the same area, now in a household of 8. In 1800 according to the brackets, Samuel is between 26 and 44 years of age, there is a female in the household in the same age bracket, and 6 household members under 16. Theoretically this could be Samuel, his wife, and 6 children (5 sons and 1 daughter). On the same census page is a John Love (a brother?), also in a household of 8. A will exists for a William Love of Londonderry, Chester County, who died in 1793. The will was witnessed by his son Samuel Love. In addition to his son Samuel, and Samuel’s son William, he mentions his wife Sarah, son John, and daughters Rebecca (Thompson), Martha, and Jean. This William Love was probably the father of Samuel Love of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Samuel Love, if born about 1771, would have been about 40 years old at the time of the War of 1812 and could logically have served. There was a Samuel Love who served in the War of 1812 as a private with the Pennsylvania Militia (17th Regiment, Wallace’s Pennsylvania Militia). Same Samuel? No way to be sure. Things get foggy, as they often do with early ancestors. Various other Samuel Loves appear in records (in New York, Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina to name a few) and there is not enough information to easily differentiate them. Interestingly, one of the Samuel Loves came to Tennessee, which could possibly accout for our John Love living most of his adult life in Tennessee. In 1807 there are records of a Samuel Love in Blount County, Tennessee regarding property dealings in Maryville. There is an 1817 record of a Samuel Love being the Director of the Maryville Bank. Yet─back to Londonderry Township in Chester, Pennsylvania─there was still a Samuel Love living there at late as 1857 (our Samuel would have been in his 80s). Unfortunately, at this point there is not enough definitive information to be sure (1) if our John Love’s father was Samuel Love, and (2) which of the many Samuel Loves─if any─was him.1 |
