(Va. archives 1731 part I, pg. 239.)

'I'he following is quoted from the William and Mary Quarterly:

"Thomas Morton (2) born (circa 1690) died in Henrico 1731, married Elizabeth Woodson (born 1699), (circa 1720). She was a daughter of Richard Woodson (3) (born 1652 at Curles in Henrico Co. Va.) and his wife Ann Smith daughter of Obadiah Smith. His will is filed in Henrico Co. 1731 and mentions the following: Eldest son Richard 212 acres where I now live. Son Thomas 250 acres south side of Appomattox in Prince George Co. (later Amelia and Prince Edward), son John 200 acres adjoining son Thomas. Eldest daughter Ann 150 acres adjoining her brother John. Daughter Judith
150 acres adjoining Ann. (Deed book 1731 part 1 p. 293). Children as follows:

Richard Morton [Thomas 2, John 1]
Ann Morton [Thomas 2, John 1]
Judith Morton [Thomas 2, John 1]
Thomas Morton [Thomas 2, John 1]
John Morton [Thomas 2, John 1]

"The 212 acres ·of land given to Richard Morton (3) in will of his Father Thomas Morton (2) (d. 1731) is the same 212 acres, deeded to Thomas Morton br John Randolph of York in 1720 (Val. rec. vol. 3 p. 1375) and is a part of the lands deeded to Captain William Randolph of Turkey Island by John Woodson, Samuel Knibbs and John Morton. He is said to have had other children.

"John Morton [Thomas 2, John 1]
John Morton was known as Captain John. He was born in Henrico Co., Va., in 1730 and died at Clinch Mountain, Va. (now west Va.) in 1796. He married Mary Anderson (born 1736), in 1750. He was one of the Trustees of Hampden Sydney College at Farmville, Va., and was quite prominent in the management of.all affairs in his country. He raised a company of soldiers in Prince Edward County, Va., for the 4th regiment of the Continental Army in 1776.

"The roster of Captain John Morton's Co. of Prince Edward Co. for July 1776 is printed in Va. magazine of History vol. 17 p. 305. The original is on file in the manuscript division of the Congressional library at Washington, D. C
.
"The list also gives the roster for August 1776 which is the same as that for July 1776 except that Thomas Williams, Meshek Boaz and William Casey are on the August list.

"There were doubtless many others on his roster during his 7 years service in the war as it is known that he had several sons and many nephews in the 4th Va. regiment with him.

"The book containing this roster shows the individual account of each soldier as the company was first organized and in addition shows payments for supplies and/or other services rendered the Continental establishment by a large number of citizens and soldiers in 1781.

"Captain John Morton was also deputy Commissioner under Quarter Master General Pierce of the Continental Army.

"Thomas Morton (3) named above was in his brother John's Company (Revolutionary War) when it first started and Thomas Morton and his brother John were also in the French and Indian Wars from Prince Edward Co. Va. in 1758, and belonged to a detachment of a co. under Major Andrew Lewis. (Va. C. rec. vol. 2 p. 18)

Samuel Morton (4) named of date Nov. 28th in payments for supplies furnished the military establishment (Revolutionary War) was son of Thomas Morton (3), and Nathaniel Morton was son of Captain John."3
