Anecdote | Henry Adams, Sr. was an early pioneer of Habersham Co and Lumpkin Co, GA. Probably born in NC, his family was living in Pendleton Dist, SC by 1790 near the Oolenoy River and the current city of Pumpkintown. It was there on 29 Dec 1797 that his father John Adams, Sr sold him 214 acres for a token $20. He was also granted 100 acres from John Drayton, Governor of SC in Pendleton Dist on 1 Jan 1798. Over the next few years Henry bought and sold property several times in Pendleton Dist with the last transaction occurring on 26 feb 1824 when he sold 173 acres on Adams Creek of the Saluda River (the property on which he lived) to Cornelius Keith. From Pendleton Dist, he moved to Habersham Co in the late 1820's and shortly afterward into Lumpkin Co during the days of the Georgia gold rush. There he and his wife Hannah raised a large family and Henry became a prominent citizen. His name appears on many records as a Justice of the Peace. In 1832, he was a fortunate drawer in the Cherokee Land Lottery. Living in Chastain's Dist of Habersham Co, he drew a lot which is contained in current Floyd Co. It is not known whether he ever claimed the property, but some of his children did move to Gilmer and Fannin Counties whch is nearby. When Lumpkin Co was officially formed, it probably took in the portion of Habersham where Henry and his sons lived. Henry continued to lived in Lumpkin until his death which occurred after the 1840 census was taken. 1793 Apr 11 Ebenezer Fain sold 150 acres on S. Branch of Oolenoy Creek to William Reid for 50 pounds sterling. Property granted to Robert Wilson by Thomas Pinckney 5 Dec 1787. Recorded in Book TTTT, p. 604.
