Anecdote | In searching for the parents of our ancestor William Walter (“Bill”) Love, we knew only that Bill was born about 1874 in Tennessee, plus we had a "family hearsay" clue. Bill’s children recalled that he told them his father had been married twice and had 16 children. The 1880 census in Knoxville, Tennessee, shows 6-year old William W. Love's father as Sam Love, age 50, and his mother as Sarah E. Love, age 33. Marriage records show that an "E. Love" and Sarah Darnell (also found as Sallie) were married on February 13, 1866 in Grainger County, Tennessee. From other records, we learn that the “E” stands for Ebzan (sometimes misspelled Elzan, Edzan, Ebyan, or Ebson). Further research shows that Ebzan Love was the same person as Sam Love--his name was sometimes shown as S. Ebzan Love, with the “S” standing for Samuel, probably after his paternal grandfather. Although his full name was Samuel Ebzan Love, he often went by by Ebzan or "Eb." The unusual name Ebzan is believed to be a biblical name. Ebzan's occupation was blacksmith. Sarah Darnell was Ebzan's 2nd wife. Ebzan's 1st wife was Emma Bailey, whom he married on October 4, 1852 in Madison County, North Carolina. Emma died between 1862 and 1865. The 1860 census shows Ebzan living with Emma in Madison, North Carolina with the following children: 1. Nancy E. Love, age 6, born about 1854 in Tennessee 2. John H. Love, age 4, born about 1856 in Tennessee 3. James Love, age 3, born about 1857 in North Carolina 4. Virginia (misspelled as Fergena) Love, age 1, born about 1859 in North Carolina Two additional children were born to Ebzan and Emma between the time of the 1860 census and Emma's death a few years later: 5. Ebzan Love, Jr., born Sept. 1860 in North Carolina, died 1917. (Occupation railroad engineer, married Alice Paralee Shelby.) 6. Edwin Love, born about 1862 in North Carolina On February 13, 1866, Ebzan, now a widower, married his 2nd wife, Sarah E. Darnell. The 1870 census shows Ebzan living with Sarah, all of the above six children, plus an additional two children of their own: 7. Margaret C. Love, born 11 Feb 1867, died 1947. (Margaret's death certificate verifies that her parents were Ebzan Love and Sallie Darnell.) 8. Milton Love, born about 1869. (Probably named after Sarah's brother.) The 1880 census shows Sarah's mother, Ruth Darnell, living with them, as well as children Margaret and Milton, plus an additional 5 children: 9. Mary J. Love, age 9, born about 1871 10. Correen A. Love, age 7, born about 1873 11. William W. Love, age 6, born 1874, born in Tennessee 12. Musiadora Love, age 2, born about 1878 13. Charles D. Love, age 1, born about 1879 An Alabama census for the same year (1880), shows an Ebzan Love living alone in Springville, St. Clair County, Alabama. Facts on that census include that he is 53, was born in Tennessee, his occupation is blacksmith, he’s been unemployed 3 months out of last 12, his father was born in Pennsylvania, and his mother was born in Virginia. This gives us enough information to know that it's the same Ebzan. Ebzan likely went to Alabama to look for work and to be near his son Ebzan Love, Jr., from his first marriage, who worked on the railroad there. Directories show that Ebzan Love, Sr. and Ebzan Love, Jr. lived next door to each other in Alabama. Ebzan Sr. was probably planning to send for his family as soon as he became established there. Perhaps Sarah's mother Ruth had been brought into the 1880 Tennessee household to help Sarah manage with all the children until things got settled for the move to Alabama. Ebzan probably moved to Alabama very shortly after the 1880 Tennessee census count and was counted twice, once in Tennessee (as “Sam”) and once in Alabama (as “Ebzan”). He remained in Alabama. Sarah joined him there sometime between late 1880 and 1884, and two more children were born to them in Alabama: 14. Eugene M.Love, born Feb. 1885 in Birmingham, Alabama 15. Clyde (or Clide) C. Love, born August 1887 in Birmingham, Alabama Sarah died in 1895 at the age of about 48. The 1900 census (in which Ebzan's name is misspelled as Ebyan) lists Ebzan as a widower, with only the two youngest children, Eugene and Clide, still at home. The total child count for Ebzan Love adds up to 15, not 16. Perhaps William Walter Love's recollection was one child off, or possibly there was an additional child who died young and was not counted in the census. Ebzan is found on a list of over 22,000 Southerners who filed a claim between 1871 and 1873 with the Southern Claims Commission, claiming their property had been taken by U.S. military personnel for use in the Civil War. His claim was allowed. The county listed was Hamblen. Such claims were allowed if the claimant could prove through the testimony of others that he had lost property, and was loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Although Tennessee, North Carolina and Alabama, the states in which Ebzan lived, were all confederate states, Eb apparently remained loyal to the Union (although some have said that many southerners did whatever they had to to receive compensation and did not consider it “lying” to “lie” to a Yankee...) Ebzan probably was loyal to the Union in spite of his sourthern roots--records show that his brother, Luther M. Love, fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War. Ebzan died in 1910, in his 80s. He and Sarah are buried side by side in Oak Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. Sarah's tombstone says, “Sarah E., wife of E. Love, Sr., born April 22, 1849 in Morristown, Tennessee, died November 21, 1895.” Ebzan's headstone is three concrete steps with “E. Love, Sr.” carved on the top step. Although no years are listed on his headstone, cemetery records give his birth year as 1830 (it was probably a few years earlier), and his death date as 29 January 1910. In tracing Ebzan and Sarah farther back, we learn Ebzan’s father was John Love of Pennsylvania and his mother Nancy Rinehart of Virginia. Sarah’s parents were William Darnell and Ruth Hodges of Tennessee.9 |
