Biography

Anecdote"The Ferris family was originally from Leicestershire, England, descended from Henri de Ferriers, son of Gwalchelme de Ferriers, Master of Horse to the Duke of Normandy." ("Americans of Gentle Birth and Their Ancestors", Vol. I, Editor Mrs. H. D. Pittman, Published by Euston and Skinner, St. Louis, Mo., 1903, pg. 358-59.)

Nichlos Farrar and Richard Ferris, were both issued from the House of Farrar, descended from Sir Henri Ferrier, who came over with William the Conqueror. It seems more than probable that Richard Ferris of "Curles" was the fifth child of Nicholas Ferrer and Mary Woodenorth, brother of Nicholas the emigrant whose name was spelled Ferreis. ("Pedigree of Ferrers") Richard Ferris came to Henrico Co., Va., in 1636. ("Early Immigrants in Virginia", by Greer, pg. 113.)3
